An Austin and Denver based vintage clothing company bringing you the most fire vintage snapbacks and threads in existence.
While also creating some of our own custom snapbacks with friends along the way.
Our vintage clothing company has 2 goals -
- To instill the beautiful nostalgia of vintage clothing culture into the lives of everyone we connect with.
- And to do all we can as a business and residents of planet earth to preserve and enhance the natural world around us.
But this dream and project of ours didn’t happen overnight. Hear about how it all came together from the lead designer and hat hunter himself, Scott Abbey.
Scott Abbey - Founder & Lead Hat Hunter
Growing up, I had always loved searching for vintage clothes at thrift stores. But not because I listened to Macklemore or was into pre-owned furniture. And it definitely wasn’t because I had any intention of starting my own vintage clothing company.
Mainly, it was because I was a broke teenager who couldn’t afford expensive clothes. But it wasn’t after a while that I realized that within these random assortments of clothes, hats, belts, and shoes, were some hidden fortunes.
Particularly, vintage snapbacks for sale at incredibly low prices that were also, incredibly dope. I thought I had come across some secret that no one knew about. It wasn’t until later on that I realized the vintage thrift game was no secret, and there was a whole world about to open up in front of me.
When I got to College at the University of Texas in Austin, I found myself in a city of incredible flavor that was totally different from where I grew up in Dallas. But not just the flavor of the food (which is out of this world), I’m talking about the flavor of the city. The people there were absolutely fascinating. Some, a little wacky, but in the best possible way.
One of the first things I noticed about the people in my vibrant new community was their sense of style. A style that emanated the vintage clothing appeal that I had grown to love so much. From Savers to Goodwills, Austin was littered with thrift stores. And you could see their presence radiate throughout the people of the city.
A Moment of Realization
When my sophomore year ended in 2018 and summer rolled around, I found myself unemployed and completely broke with no idea what I wanted to do with my life. Meanwhile, all my friends were locking down summer internships and other jobs to occupy their time and make some money.
I was an economics major from a family of actuaries. I got good grades, had great relationships with my professors, but something was lingering in the back of my head telling me that a life of numbers wasn’t for me. Something was pulling me in another direction. Which direction that was, I didn’t know yet. So, I took the summer of 2016 as a period of reflection to see what it is I could do with my life.
Winter 2016 - When Lightning Strikes
When Junior year started and winter rolled around, I got hungry. Like Kobayashi with the munchies hungry. But not for hot dogs. I was hungry to start a meaningful business revolving around something I felt passionate about. One day, I was sitting around my room at my parents house and I spotted this Dallas Cowboys B2B Super Bowl snapback. One of my first and most prized snapbacks. It was at that moment that I realized how much I had really grown to love vintage wear, and what it was that I had to do.
The Story Begins
My plan was to start a vintage snapback company. At the time, I felt like the clothing market was too saturated to break into so I went with where my obsession began - vintage snapbacks. So I sold some of my favorite snapbacks (including my prized Dallas Cowboys Superbowl Snapback) and gathered all the money I had from a sportsbook a friend and I were running to buy my first few hats. And the rest is history.
Since we first started the company, under the name Scotty Vintage, we have grown from a small-scale snapback company to a buyer, designer, trader, and manufacturer of eco-friendly hats, vintage snapbacks and vintage clothing that operates internationally. While our passion has and will continue to be vintage snapbacks, we are happy to begin expanding into the vintage clothing market for the Snag & Stitch faithful.
